Common Name: Black-breasted Puffleg
Scientific Name: Eriocnemis nigrivestis

Distribution: This species of Hummingbird is confined to the North- western slopes of the Pichincha volcano in the north-central part of Ecuador.

Biology: The Black-breasted Puffleg is found in stunted elfin forest in the Ecuadorian highlands of the Pichincha volcano, where it feeds on nectar from a variety of flowering plants, but the species is known to prefer nectar from Macleania sp. and Palicourea huigrensis (the latter also being endemic to these forests.) Most of the species main remaining habitat is located in the Yanacocha Reserve, a private reserve which is managed by the Jocotoco Foundation.

IUCN Conservation Status: Endangered
This bird has seen a rapid decline over the past decades, mainly due to habitat destruction, and the its population is currently estimated to be around 300 individuals.
